How Do You Define Success?

April 17th, 2018

Most people want to achieve success in their careers. However, success does not mean the same thing to every person. To some, success is a big paycheck and a corner office while to others it is loving your job or doing something meaningful.

When you are looking for work, it’s important you have a clear idea of how you define success, so you can share your goals with your recruiter and your recruiter can help you to find a position that will allow you to achieve your objectives. So, how can you define success?

  • Think about what being happy in your work means to you: When you look back on your work life, how do you want to describe it? What types of jobs would make you excited to get up and go to work in the morning? Is it more important for you to have time at home or a make a lot of money? By asking yourself what would make you the happiest, you can get a clear idea of what types of positions to pursue.
  • Focus on people whose lives and careers you admire: Often, it is hard to chart your own course and define what success looks like. The good news is, you don’t have to carve out your own path. You can look towards mentors or people whose careers you admire to find your own way to follow in their footsteps. Having someone to emulate and guide you on your career path can make it much easier for you to determine what success means to you.
  • Reevaluate success as your career advances: Your definition of success does not have to be stagnant. It can develop and change throughout the course of your life as your career and personal goals change. As your life evolves, don’t be afraid to ask yourself again and again what success means and to change course if you are no longer on the path that will get you there.
